Pain of the neck and shoulders is most commonly the result of injury to the affected area. The neck not only supports the head but provides structure for and protection of the trachea, esophagus, and all of the veins and arteries that lead to the brain. For this reason the neck injury can present itself with local pain as well as referred pain. Headache, stiffness of the shoulders and upper body as well as loss of appetite, numbness, and tingling sensations are just a few of the possible symptoms.
If you have been involved in an automobile accident, it is possible that sudden pressure applied to your upper body as a result of blunt trauma has injured your neck. The impact may have been head–on, from the side or from the rear. Each impact presents a different type of force and a different injury result.
If you experience weakness of your arms and hands, stiffness of your shoulders or neck, or tingling of your upper extremities, you may have damaged the soft tissue, muscle or vertebrae of the cervical spine.
